We like to break free from giving endless directions to follow and instead support young artists as they think outside the box.

DREAM. PLAY. MAKE. EXPLORE. DISCOVER.

We understand you have a lot of choices when it comes to Summer Camps. It can be overwhelming.

Here is why artSPARK should hold some place in your summer plans:

IN A NUTSHELL, when we think of summer we think of long, blissful days to dream, play, be care-free, explore, discover, and soak in the unstructured time away from school.  Families these days are BUSY!  Kids need a break from routine to let their imaginations run free and make their own rules in a safe and supportive environment.  At artSPARK Creative Studio, kids will problem-solve, use critical thinking skills, collaborate, experiment, invent, and be exposed to new artists, materials, and processes for inspiration.

  • FREEDOM

Kids crave it. Adults want to control it and structure it. artSPARK reigns it in so kids can live in that coveted unstructured time in a safe, supportive environment. We follow the child and guide the process, giving instruction as they show readiness. Being creative is something kids do naturally until they’re taught not to. For those that may have shut that down, we help re-wire their brains to connect back to that dormant space where authentic creativity and self-expression lives. For those that found a way to keep this magic alive, we continue to help fuel the fire.

  • AUTHENTIC CREATIVITY

We understand each child is different. This is why their art and process should look different. We give kids choice and meet them where they are with functioning in that freedom. We believe the process is just as important as the product, so we don’t force the path to a “pretty” product every minute of the day. We set up invitations to create with open-ended outcomes, allowing kids the creative power to own their ideas and work through the artistic process with guidance rather than following a "recipe" with an expected outcome. There’s a lot of learning in the mess, and we teach kids that it’s ok to make a mistake or have something not turn out like the plan.

  • CHOICE = ENGAGEMENT

We all want our kids to be engaged and use their brains over the summer, but we also want them to WANT to do it! We allow kids to choose what subject matter and media is important to the idea and process each child wants to engage in. This results in ENGAGED kids. And engaged kids are happy, productive kids who are learning much more than a forced curriculum or project.

  • INNOVATION + PLAY

So many recent articles and studies are surfacing about how today’s child needs less screen time, less structure, and more play. More social interaction, collaboration, imaginative engagement, and interaction with the real world. We provide all of this along with outside time to move and get energy out in our backyard/garden.

  • CRITICAL THINKING + PROBLEM SOLVING

Kids are naturally curious and often act as little scientists when given the opportunity. This is why we do not give all the answers. We allow those questions, observations, and discoveries to bubble to the surface. Then give them the tools and dialogue to complete their experiment and form some conclusions. Being creative is a lot about learning to think.

  • EXPERT STAFF

Co-founders, Michele and Andrea work alongside Lead Instructors and Studio Assistants to oversee all camp ideas and plans. They are also on site during camps to run the program behind the scenes and step in when needed. Lead teachers have at least a Bachelor’s degree, a background in art, and experience working with kids. Assistants have a passion for and experience with art as well as experience with kids. They are trained in artSPARK methodology and are excited to be energetic and fun for your creative kids! All staff is trained in First Aid and CPR. Note: We are currently updating our staff page. Summer staff will be added very soon.

what will your child make and do each day? are there themes?

We offer drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, sewing, and weaving as well as other materials and processes when we see the right opportunity. All of these materials are offered in each MIXED MEDIA camp. Look at each offering below to see which processes will be highlighted each week with more instruction and demos provided for project inspiration. *Remember, even if one week has more of a drawing or painting focus, your child will get to choose from any of our available materials after seeing the demos and project inspiration. That means, a sculpture could come home even on a week where sculpture is not the main focus. This is the beauty of Mixed Media camps. Kids are exposed to different processes and learn new things, but get to make what is important to them. We also have time for snack and a break outside to run, play, and do some outdoor art on our back patio/garden.

Although we do not have set themes in terms of subject matter, themes do emerge as the kids get in the flow of creating because we encourage them to find what is important in their own life and express that. This often inspires others and starts a trend in the studio.  We follow the artistic interests of the kids, planning and preparing right along with the latest trend.

Your child will make something meaningful to them and age appropriate based on their skill level, or be able to tell you the process they engaged in if the product wasn’t as important at the time, or didn’t work out as expected.

*NEW THIS YEAR* We are offering a Photography Camp!

These are taught by professionals in their field.

June 3-6: 3D Deconstruction Construction + Mixed Media

Do you have a child that LOVES to take things apart? How about one that sees a new use or has a vision for every little broken piece or part laying around? We’ve seen and worked with many kids that fit this profile. This is the week to send them (also offered August 5-8).

We’ll be taking apart old machines with screwdrivers, pliers, and maybe even the occasional hammer. We’ll assess the goods, use our imaginations, and brainstorm what new life these parts can transform into…then build it! Even if your child is not into this, they will have choices to work with other materials available in the studio after this project inspiration is presented. This is the beauty of a mixed media camp!

July 15-18: Creative Painting + Drawing + Mixed Media

Painting and Drawing…These are the two most asked about mediums when people call about art lessons. We have lots of materials and tools to support these processes. So much so that we like to get a little creative and show kids innovative ways to create with them. Think layered canvases, watercolor techniques, acrylic techniques, monoprinting, cartoon drawing, nature, animals, and more! Even if your child is not into this, they will have choices to work with other materials available in the studio after this project inspiration is presented. Kids also love to design clothes for any “living” thing in their pretend world. We are supporting this process this week by having LOADS of fabric choices to dress up art mannequins or other 3-D characters that come to life after building with loose parts. In both practices we will talk about attachment techniques and best practices for planning and designing whatever their imaginations dream up.

Even if your child is not into this, they will have choices to work with other materials available in the studio after this project inspiration is presented. This is the beauty of a mixed media camp!
