This course is designed to give media instruction within a choice-based framework. Lessons will focus on a variety of techniques and processes along with how artists think, work, and get ideas. Project inspiration will be provided, but each artist will make decisions about what materials, processes, and kind of art they want to make.

We want to foster independence in a studio environment while exposing kids to new skills and ways to work. We encourage exploration, experimentation, collaboration, and innovation. We teach problem solving skills and work through failure instead of paving the way for success at every moment. We believe that process is just as important as product. This means that what your child brings home is dependent on their interests, how quickly they work, and what stage of the artistic process they are focusing on. Even if a drawing prompt or lesson is presented, the child will have the choice to spend the work time in sculpture or another media center, if that is what most motivates them to create.

The first 4 classes will show techniques and concepts that relate to drawing, painting, sculpture, and/or mixed media (including printmaking, hand sewing, weaving, felting, and other specialized media). Students must watch and sometimes try out a new material or technique, but may make other choices to be creative during the work time. Lessons will always be tailored to the group and/or skill level of the students, and much more instruction will be given 1:1 during the work time. Opportunities for sensory and creative play will also be provided.

Students may enroll in more than one session. No sessions are exactly the same and students will be allowed to advance at their own pace. Min: 4 students, Max: 15
